French Fourth Republic
The French Fourth Republic was established in 1946 after World War II and lasted until 1958. It aimed to rebuild France and restore democracy, following the authoritarian regime of the Vichy government during the war. The republic was characterized by a parliamentary system, with a weak executive and frequent changes in government.
Despite its democratic intentions, the Fourth Republic faced significant challenges, including political instability and economic difficulties. It struggled to address issues like the decolonization of Algeria and other territories. Ultimately, the republic ended when Charles de Gaulle returned to power, leading to the establishment of the Fifth Republic.
