Foveaux Strait
Foveaux Strait is a body of water located between the southern coast of New Zealand's South Island and Stewart Island. It measures approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) in length and is known for its strong currents and diverse marine life. The strait plays a crucial role in the local fishing industry, particularly for abalone and mussels.
The strait is named after Admiral Edward Foveaux, who explored the area in the early 19th century. It serves as a natural boundary between the two islands and is an important route for shipping and transportation. The surrounding waters are also popular for recreational activities like fishing and boating.
