Foot and Mouth Disease
Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral infection that primarily affects cloven-hoofed animals, such as cattle, sheep, and pigs. The disease is caused by the foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) and can lead to severe health issues in livestock, including fever, blisters in the mouth and on the feet, and reduced milk production.
FMD is not a threat to human health, but it can have significant economic impacts on agriculture and trade. Infected animals must be quarantined, and outbreaks can lead to culling to prevent the spread of the virus. Vaccination is a key control measure in managing FMD.
