First Battle Of Ypres
The First Battle of Ypres took place from October 19 to November 22, 1914, during World War I. It was fought in and around the Belgian town of Ypres as part of the "Race to the Sea." The battle involved British and French forces defending against the advancing German Army, aiming to secure control of the Channel ports.
The battle was marked by intense trench warfare and heavy casualties on both sides. Despite the fierce fighting, the Allies managed to hold their positions, preventing the Germans from breaking through. This battle set the stage for the prolonged stalemate that characterized much of the war.
