Federal Writers' Project
The Federal Writers' Project (FWP) was a New Deal program established in 1935 as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Its primary goal was to provide employment for writers, historians, and researchers during the Great Depression. The FWP produced a variety of works, including state guides, folklore collections, and oral histories, which documented American life and culture.
One of the most notable achievements of the FWP was the creation of the American Guide Series, a collection of travel guides for each state. The project also contributed to the preservation of African American folklore and the documentation of the experiences of various ethnic groups in the United States.
