FGC
FGC, or Female Genital Cutting, refers to a range of procedures that involve the partial or total removal of external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. This practice is often rooted in cultural, religious, or social beliefs and is prevalent in various regions, particularly in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
The World Health Organization (WHO) categorizes FGC into four types, each varying in severity and health implications. FGC can lead to severe physical and psychological consequences, including complications during childbirth and increased risk of infections. Efforts to eliminate this practice focus on education, community engagement, and legal reforms.
