Ethanethiol
Ethanethiol, also known as ethyl mercaptan, is a colorless, flammable liquid with a strong odor resembling that of rotten cabbage. It is a simple thiol compound, consisting of a two-carbon chain with a sulfur atom attached. Its chemical formula is C2H6S, and it is commonly used as an odorant in natural gas to help detect leaks, as natural gas is odorless.
In addition to its use in gas odorization, ethanethiol is also utilized in the production of various chemicals and as a solvent in laboratories. Due to its strong smell, it is important to handle ethanethiol with care, as exposure can cause irritation to the eyes and respiratory system.
