Estivation is a survival strategy used by some animals to cope with extreme heat and dry conditions. During this period, animals enter a state of dormancy, reducing their metabolic rate to conserve energy and water. This behavior is common in species like snails, frogs, and certain reptiles that live in hot, arid environments.
Unlike hibernation, which occurs in response to cold temperatures, estivation helps animals avoid dehydration and food scarcity during summer months. By burrowing into the ground or finding shelter, these animals can remain inactive until conditions improve, allowing them to survive until the return of moisture and cooler temperatures.
