Estienne de La Boétie
Estienne de La Boétie (1530-1563) was a French writer and political philosopher, best known for his work "Discours de la servitude volontaire" (Discourse on Voluntary Servitude). In this essay, he explores the nature of tyranny and the reasons why people willingly submit to oppressive rule. La Boétie's ideas have influenced various political movements and thinkers throughout history.
A close friend of the famous Michel de Montaigne, La Boétie was also a member of the Renaissance intellectual movement. His writings emphasize the importance of individual freedom and the moral responsibility of citizens to resist unjust authority. Despite his relatively short life, La Boétie's thoughts continue to resonate in discussions about liberty and governance.
