Erlitou culture
The Erlitou culture is an archaeological culture that existed in northern China during the early Bronze Age, approximately from 1900 to 1500 BCE. It is primarily associated with the site of Erlitou, located in present-day Henan Province. This culture is significant for its advancements in metallurgy, pottery, and urban planning, indicating a complex society with social stratification.
Artifacts from the Erlitou culture include bronze vessels, ceramics, and tools, which suggest a high level of craftsmanship. The culture is often linked to the early development of the Xia dynasty, one of China's legendary dynasties, although direct evidence of this connection remains debated among scholars.
