Epithelial Basement Membrane Dystrophy
Epithelial Basement Membrane Dystrophy (EBMD) is a common eye condition affecting the cornea, the clear front part of the eye. It occurs when the basement membrane, a thin layer of tissue beneath the epithelial cells, becomes irregular or thickened. This can lead to symptoms such as blurred vision, discomfort, and recurrent corneal erosions, where the outer layer of the cornea becomes damaged.
EBMD is often diagnosed during a routine eye examination using a slit lamp. While it can affect people of all ages, it is more prevalent in middle-aged individuals. Treatment options may include lubricating eye drops, bandage contact lenses, or, in severe cases, surgical procedures to improve vision and comfort.
