English Court Jester
The English Court Jester, also known as a fool, was a performer in royal courts during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Their role was to entertain the monarch and guests through humor, music, and acrobatics. Unlike other entertainers, jesters had the unique privilege of speaking freely, often using satire to comment on politics and society.
Jesters typically wore colorful costumes and a distinctive hat with bells, which added to their playful image. They often carried props like a marotte, a stick with a carved head, to enhance their performances. While they were seen as entertainers, jesters also served as advisors, using wit to convey truths that others could not.
