Court Jesters
Court jesters were entertainers in royal courts during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. They often wore colorful costumes and distinctive hats with bells, using humor, music, and acrobatics to amuse the monarch and their guests. Jesters had a unique role, as they could speak freely and offer criticism without fear of punishment, often using satire to comment on political and social issues.
In addition to their comedic performances, jesters sometimes served as advisors, using their wit to convey important messages. They were skilled in various arts, including storytelling and juggling, making them versatile figures in the court. Notable jesters, like Will Sommers, entertained famous monarchs such as Henry VIII.
