Enameling
Enameling is a decorative technique that involves fusing powdered glass to a metal surface through high heat. The process creates a smooth, colorful finish that can be used on various metals, including copper, silver, and gold. Enamel can be applied in layers, allowing for intricate designs and vibrant colors, making it popular in jewelry and art.
The enameling process typically requires a kiln, where the metal piece is heated to temperatures between 1400°F and 1600°F (760°C to 870°C). Once the glass powder melts and adheres to the metal, it cools to form a durable, glass-like coating. This technique has been used for centuries in various cultures, including ancient Egypt and China.
