Ellipsis
An ellipsis is a punctuation mark consisting of three consecutive dots (...). It is used to indicate the omission of words in a sentence, allowing for a more concise expression of ideas. For example, in a quote, if part of the text is removed, an ellipsis shows that something has been left out without altering the original meaning.
In addition to omissions, an ellipsis can also convey a pause or unfinished thought in dialogue. This usage helps to create a sense of suspense or uncertainty. Writers often use ellipses in literature, such as in the works of Ernest Hemingway or F. Scott Fitzgerald, to enhance the emotional impact of their narratives.
