Elephas maximus
Elephas maximus, commonly known as the Asian elephant, is one of the largest land mammals. They are characterized by their large ears, long trunks, and tusks, which are present in some males. Asian elephants typically inhabit forests, grasslands, and river valleys across India, Sri Lanka, and parts of Southeast Asia.
These elephants are social animals, living in matriarchal herds led by an older female. They play a crucial role in their ecosystems by helping to maintain the vegetation and creating pathways for other animals. Unfortunately, Elephas maximus faces threats from habitat loss and poaching, leading to a decline in their populations.
