Elara is one of the largest moons of Jupiter, the fifth planet from the Sun. It was discovered in 1905 by the astronomer Charles Dillon Perrine. Elara is part of a group of moons known as the Himalia group, which share similar orbits and characteristics. Elara has a diameter of about 86 kilometers (53 miles) and is irregularly shaped, resembling a potato. Its surface is covered with craters, indicating that it has been impacted by other celestial bodies over time. Elara orbits Jupiter at a distance of approximately 11 million kilometers (6.8 million miles).
