Edward Smith-Stanley, 8th Earl of Derby
Edward Smith-Stanley, 8th Earl of Derby (1775-1851), was a British nobleman and politician. He served as a Member of Parliament and held the position of Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire. The Earl was known for his involvement in local governance and his contributions to the Whig Party during a time of significant political change in Britain.
In addition to his political career, the 8th Earl was a prominent figure in the world of horse racing. He was instrumental in establishing the Derby Stakes, one of the most prestigious horse races in the United Kingdom, which continues to be held annually at Epsom Downs Racecourse.
