Edmund of East Anglia
Edmund of East Anglia, also known as Saint Edmund, was a king who ruled in the early 9th century. He is best known for his resistance against Viking invasions, particularly during the reign of King Ivar the Boneless. Edmund was captured by the Vikings and, according to legend, was martyred for refusing to renounce his faith.
After his death, Edmund became a revered figure and was canonized as a saint. His shrine in Bury St Edmunds became a significant pilgrimage site in medieval England. He is often depicted with a crown and arrows, symbolizing his martyrdom and royal status.
