Eastern Wild Turkey
The Eastern Wild Turkey is a large bird native to the eastern United States. It is known for its distinctive fan-shaped tail and iridescent feathers, which can appear in shades of bronze, green, and gold. Adult males, called toms, can weigh between 15 to 25 pounds, while females, or hens, are generally smaller. They are omnivorous, feeding on a diet of seeds, fruits, insects, and small animals.
These turkeys are social creatures, often found in flocks, especially during the non-breeding season. They are known for their strong flying abilities, capable of short bursts up to 55 miles per hour. The Eastern Wild Turkey plays a significant role in the ecosystem by helping to control insect populations and dispersing seeds.
