Eastern Red-Spotted Newt
The Eastern Red-Spotted Newt, scientifically known as Notophthalmus viridescens, is a small amphibian found in eastern North America. It typically inhabits freshwater habitats like ponds, lakes, and streams. This newt has a distinctive bright orange or red coloration with small black spots, especially in its juvenile stage, known as the eft stage.
As adults, Eastern Red-Spotted Newts transition to a more olive-green color and live primarily in aquatic environments. They play a vital role in their ecosystem by controlling insect populations and serving as prey for various predators. Their life cycle includes aquatic larvae, terrestrial efts, and adult forms.
