East Pacific Rise
The East Pacific Rise is a mid-ocean ridge located along the eastern edge of the Pacific Ocean. It is a divergent tectonic plate boundary where the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate are moving apart. This geological feature is known for its underwater volcanic activity, which creates new oceanic crust as magma rises from the mantle.
Spanning over 3,000 miles, the East Pacific Rise is one of the longest mountain ranges in the world. It plays a crucial role in the process of seafloor spreading, contributing to the dynamic nature of Earth's surface and influencing ocean currents and ecosystems in the surrounding waters.
