Dutch Maritime History
Dutch Maritime History is marked by the Netherlands' significant role in global trade and exploration during the 16th and 17th centuries, known as the Dutch Golden Age. The Dutch East India Company (VOC), established in 1602, became a powerful trading entity, dominating spice trade routes and establishing colonies in Asia.
The Dutch were also skilled shipbuilders and navigators, developing advanced ships like the fluyt, which allowed for efficient cargo transport. Their maritime prowess led to the establishment of a vast colonial empire, influencing trade, culture, and politics worldwide, particularly in regions like the Indonesian Archipelago and the Caribbean.
