Duke Alfonso I of Ferrara
Duke Alfonso I of Ferrara (1476-1534) was a prominent Italian nobleman and ruler of the Duchy of Ferrara. He was the son of Ercole I d'Este and Leonora of Aragon, and he became Duke in 1505. Alfonso was known for his patronage of the arts and his efforts to enhance the cultural life of Ferrara, attracting artists and scholars to his court.
Alfonso's reign was marked by political maneuvering and alliances, particularly through his marriage to Lucrezia Borgia, the daughter of Pope Alexander VI. This union strengthened his political position and helped secure his family's influence in the region. Alfonso's legacy includes the continued prominence of the House of Este in Italian history.
