Dowry System
The dowry system is a cultural practice in which the family of the bride provides gifts, money, or property to the groom and his family as part of the marriage arrangement. This practice is prevalent in various societies, particularly in parts of South Asia, and is often seen as a way to enhance the groom's status or financial security.
While some view the dowry as a tradition that supports the newly married couple, it can also lead to negative consequences, such as financial strain on the bride's family or even violence against women if the dowry is deemed insufficient. Efforts to reform or abolish the dowry system continue in many regions, aiming to promote gender equality and protect women's rights.
