Dieppe Raid
The Dieppe Raid, also known as Operation Jubilee, was an Allied military operation during World War II that took place on August 19, 1942. The raid aimed to capture the French port of Dieppe to test German defenses and gather intelligence. It involved primarily Canadian forces, along with British and American troops, but ended in heavy casualties and limited success.
The operation faced numerous challenges, including poor planning, strong German defenses, and difficult terrain. Approximately 5,000 Canadian soldiers participated, with around 3,000 becoming casualties. The Dieppe Raid highlighted the need for better coordination and preparation in future amphibious assaults, influencing later operations like the D-Day landings.
