Diamondback Terrapin
The Diamondback Terrapin is a species of turtle found primarily in coastal salt marshes and estuaries along the eastern and southern United States. They are known for their distinctive diamond-patterned shells, which can vary in color from gray to brown. Adult terrapins typically measure between 4 to 10 inches in length and have a unique ability to tolerate brackish water.
These turtles are omnivorous, feeding on a diet that includes crabs, mollusks, and various aquatic plants. The Diamondback Terrapin plays an important role in its ecosystem by helping to control prey populations and contributing to the health of marsh habitats. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect this species from habitat loss and overharvesting.
