Dharma Shastra
Dharma Shastra refers to a body of ancient Indian texts that provide guidelines on moral and ethical conduct, law, and social duties. These texts are foundational to Hindu philosophy and cover various aspects of life, including family, property, and justice. They aim to establish a framework for living a righteous life in accordance with Dharma, or moral order.
The most well-known Dharma Shastra is the Manusmriti, which outlines the duties and responsibilities of individuals based on their social class and stage of life. Other texts, like the Yajnavalkya Smriti and Narada Smriti, also contribute to the understanding of law and ethics in ancient Indian society.
