Detente
Detente refers to the period of relaxed tensions and improved relations between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, particularly in the 1970s. This era was marked by diplomatic negotiations, arms control agreements, and increased trade, aimed at reducing the risk of nuclear conflict.
Key events of Detente included the signing of the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) treaties, which sought to limit the number of nuclear weapons. Although Detente helped ease some tensions, it ultimately faced challenges and setbacks, leading to a renewed period of hostility in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
