Desmosomes
Desmosomes are specialized structures that help cells adhere to one another, providing mechanical strength to tissues. They are particularly important in tissues that experience significant stress, such as skin and heart muscle. Desmosomes consist of protein complexes that anchor to the cell's cytoskeleton, linking adjacent cells together.
These structures are formed by proteins called cadherins, which extend from one cell to another, creating a strong bond. Desmosomes play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of tissues, ensuring that cells remain connected and can function as a cohesive unit, especially during movement or stretching.
