Desmosome
A desmosome is a specialized structure in cell membranes that helps cells adhere to one another. It consists of protein complexes that anchor the cytoskeleton of adjacent cells, providing mechanical strength and stability to tissues. Desmosomes are particularly important in tissues that experience significant stress, such as skin and heart muscle.
These structures play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of tissues by preventing cells from being pulled apart during movement or stretching. Desmosomes are part of a larger group of cell junctions, which also includes tight junctions and gap junctions, each serving different functions in cellular communication and adhesion.
