Deep Peroneal Nerve
The Deep Peroneal Nerve is a branch of the common peroneal nerve, which originates from the lumbar and sacral plexus. It primarily innervates the muscles in the front of the lower leg, including the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, and extensor digitorum longus. This nerve plays a crucial role in foot dorsiflexion, allowing the foot to lift upwards.
In addition to motor functions, the deep peroneal nerve also provides sensory innervation to the skin between the first and second toes. Damage to this nerve can lead to conditions such as foot drop, where the individual struggles to lift the foot, affecting mobility and balance.
