Decembrist revolt
The Decembrist revolt was a failed uprising that took place in Russia on December 14, 1825. A group of military officers, known as the Decembrists, protested against the autocratic rule of Tsar Nicholas I and sought to establish a constitutional monarchy. They were motivated by Enlightenment ideas and the desire for reform after the Napoleonic Wars.
The revolt occurred in St. Petersburg when the Decembrists gathered troops in Senate Square. However, the uprising was poorly organized and quickly suppressed by loyalist forces. Many leaders were arrested, executed, or exiled to Siberia, marking a significant moment in Russian history that highlighted the struggle for political change.
