Darien Scheme
The Darien Scheme was an ambitious project initiated in the late 17th century by the Scottish government to establish a colony in the Darien Gap, located in present-day Panama. The goal was to create a trading hub that would connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, enhancing Scotland's economic prospects and global trade.
Launched in 1698, the scheme faced numerous challenges, including harsh environmental conditions, disease, and conflicts with local populations. Ultimately, the venture failed, leading to significant financial losses for investors and contributing to Scotland's economic struggles, which later influenced its decision to join the Union with England in 1707.
