Cyrenean School
The Cyrenean School was an ancient philosophical school founded in the city of Cyrene, located in present-day Libya. It emerged in the 4th century BCE and is best known for its focus on hedonism, the idea that pleasure is the highest good. The school was founded by Aristippus, a student of Socrates, who emphasized the importance of immediate pleasures and experiences.
Members of the Cyrenean School believed in enjoying life's pleasures while also advocating for moderation. They distinguished between different types of pleasures, valuing mental pleasures over physical ones. The school influenced later philosophical thought, particularly in discussions about ethics and the nature of happiness.
