Cudjoe Lewis
Cudjoe Lewis was one of the last surviving individuals from the Atlantic slave trade. Born in Africa around 1840, he was captured and brought to the United States on the Clotilda, the last known slave ship to arrive in the country in 1860. After the ship's illegal voyage, he and other captives were forced into slavery in Alabama.
After the Civil War, Cudjoe Lewis and other freed slaves established a community called Africatown near Mobile, Alabama. He became a prominent figure in this community, which preserved African culture and traditions. Lewis lived until 1935, leaving a legacy that highlights the history of slavery and resilience.
