Clotilda
The Clotilda was a slave ship that became infamous for its role in the illegal transatlantic slave trade. Built in 1855, it was the last known ship to bring enslaved Africans to the United States. The ship carried over 100 captives from present-day Benin to Alabama in 1860, violating U.S. laws prohibiting the importation of slaves.
After its journey, the Clotilda was burned and sunk by its owner, Timothy Meaher, to hide evidence of the illegal voyage. In 2019, the wreck was discovered in the Mobile River, serving as a significant historical site that highlights the brutal realities of slavery in America.
