Cox-2 Inhibitors
Cox-2 inhibitors are a class of medications designed to reduce pain and inflammation by specifically blocking the cyclooxygenase-2 enzyme. This enzyme plays a key role in the production of prostaglandins, which are chemicals that promote inflammation and pain in the body. By inhibiting this enzyme, Cox-2 inhibitors can provide relief from conditions such as arthritis and acute pain.
Unlike traditional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which can affect both Cox-1 and Cox-2 enzymes, Cox-2 inhibitors primarily target only the Cox-2 pathway. This selective action helps minimize gastrointestinal side effects, making them a preferred option for some patients. However, they may still carry risks, including cardiovascular issues, and should be used under medical supervision.
