Cox-1
Cox-1, or cyclooxygenase-1, is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the production of prostaglandins, which are compounds involved in various bodily functions. It is primarily found in many tissues, including the stomach, kidneys, and platelets. Cox-1 is responsible for maintaining the protective lining of the stomach and supporting normal platelet function.
Unlike its counterpart, Cox-2, which is induced during inflammation, Cox-1 is constitutively expressed, meaning it is always present in the body. This makes it essential for everyday physiological processes, such as regulating blood flow and protecting the gastrointestinal tract from damage.
