Consular Immunity
Consular immunity is a legal protection granted to diplomats and consular officials, allowing them to perform their duties without interference from the host country. This immunity helps ensure that diplomats can represent their home country effectively and maintain peaceful international relations. It typically covers actions taken in their official capacity, safeguarding them from arrest or detention.
However, consular immunity is not absolute. It does not protect officials from serious crimes or civil lawsuits unrelated to their official duties. If a consular official abuses this immunity, the host country may request that their home country waive the immunity to allow for legal action.
