Constantine Ypsilantis
Constantine Ypsilantis was a Greek nobleman and military leader born in 1793. He is best known for his role in the early stages of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire. Ypsilantis led the Filiki Eteria, a secret society that aimed to liberate Greece and played a crucial part in organizing the uprising in 1821.
Ypsilantis initially sought support from the Russian Empire but faced challenges in gaining widespread backing. His efforts ultimately led to his defeat at the Battle of Dragasani in 1821, after which he fled to Western Europe. Despite his setbacks, Ypsilantis remains a significant figure in Greek history.
