Congenital Cytomegalovirus
Congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is a viral infection that occurs when a baby is infected with the cytomegalovirus (CMV) before birth. It is one of the most common congenital infections, affecting about 1 in 200 newborns. Many babies with cCMV may not show symptoms at birth, but some can experience serious health issues, including hearing loss, vision problems, and developmental delays.
The virus is typically transmitted from a pregnant person to their fetus through the placenta. While most healthy individuals may not experience symptoms from CMV, it can pose significant risks to unborn babies. Early detection and intervention can help manage the effects of cCMV.
