Conchae
The term "conchae" refers to the curved bony structures located within the nasal cavity. These structures, also known as nasal conchae or turbinates, help to warm, humidify, and filter the air we breathe. There are three pairs of conchae: the superior, middle, and inferior conchae, each playing a role in optimizing airflow and enhancing the sense of smell.
Conchae are covered with a mucous membrane that traps dust and pathogens, preventing them from entering the lungs. Their unique shape increases the surface area within the nasal cavity, which is essential for effective respiratory function. Proper functioning of the nasal cavity and conchae is crucial for overall respiratory health.
