Complex Trauma
Complex trauma refers to the psychological impact of prolonged or repeated exposure to traumatic events, often occurring in childhood. This type of trauma typically arises from situations such as child abuse, domestic violence, or neglect, where the individual feels trapped and unable to escape. The effects can be more severe than those of a single traumatic event, leading to difficulties in emotional regulation, self-identity, and relationships.
Individuals with complex trauma may experience symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These symptoms can manifest in various ways, including flashbacks, emotional numbness, and difficulty trusting others. Treatment often involves therapy approaches that focus on building safety, processing trauma, and developing coping strategies.
