Collembola
Collembola, commonly known as springtails, are small, wingless arthropods found in various environments, including soil, leaf litter, and decaying organic matter. They typically measure between 0.25 to 6 millimeters in length and are characterized by their ability to jump using a specialized structure called a furcula, which acts like a spring.
These creatures play a crucial role in the ecosystem by aiding in the decomposition of organic material and enhancing soil fertility. Collembola feed on fungi, bacteria, and decaying plant matter, contributing to nutrient cycling and soil health. They are an important part of the soil food web, supporting various other organisms.
