Coconino Sandstone
Coconino Sandstone is a geological formation primarily found in northern Arizona, particularly in the Grand Canyon region. It is composed mainly of fine to medium-grained quartz sand and is known for its distinctive light color, ranging from white to pale yellow. This sandstone was formed during the late Permian period, around 265 million years ago, when the area was covered by vast desert dunes.
The formation is notable for its well-preserved cross-bedding, which provides insights into ancient wind patterns and environments. Coconino Sandstone is also an important source of information for geologists studying sedimentary processes and the history of the Colorado Plateau.
