Coccygeal Nerves
The coccygeal nerves are a pair of spinal nerves that emerge from the coccyx, or tailbone, region of the spine. They are part of the sacral plexus and consist of the first coccygeal nerve (Co1). These nerves primarily provide sensory and motor functions to the skin around the coccyx and contribute to the innervation of the pelvic floor.
Coccygeal nerves play a role in the pudendal nerve system, which is important for pelvic organ function. They help in transmitting signals related to pain, touch, and temperature from the area surrounding the coccyx. Dysfunction in these nerves can lead to discomfort or pain known as coccydynia.
