Co-operative Movement
The Co-operative Movement is a social and economic initiative that promotes the establishment of co-operatives, which are organizations owned and operated by their members. These members work together to meet common needs, such as purchasing goods, providing services, or sharing resources. The movement emphasizes democratic control, where each member has an equal say in decision-making, and aims to create a fairer distribution of wealth.
Originating in the early 19th century, the movement gained momentum with the establishment of the first successful co-operative, the Rochdale Pioneers, in 1844. Today, co-operatives exist in various sectors, including agriculture, retail, and finance, and are guided by principles such as voluntary membership and community focus.
