Circassian Genocide
The Circassian Genocide refers to the mass killing and forced displacement of the Circassian people during the 19th century, particularly between 1763 and 1864. This tragic event occurred during the Russian Empire's expansion into the Caucasus region, where the Circassians resisted Russian control. As a result, many were killed, while others were exiled to the Ottoman Empire and other regions.
The genocide led to the near destruction of Circassian culture and population. Estimates suggest that around 1.5 million Circassians were affected, with a significant portion of the population either killed or displaced. Today, the Circassian diaspora continues to seek recognition and justice for these historical atrocities.
