Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders
Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders are conditions that disrupt the natural sleep-wake cycle, which is regulated by the body's internal clock. This internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm, influences various biological processes, including sleep patterns, hormone release, and body temperature. When the circadian rhythm is misaligned with the external environment, it can lead to difficulties in falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up at the desired time.
Common types of these disorders include Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder, where individuals struggle to fall asleep until late at night, and Advanced Sleep Phase Disorder, where they wake up very early. Other examples include Shift Work Disorder, affecting those who work non-traditional hours, and Jet Lag, which occurs after long-distance travel. Treatment often involves lifestyle changes, light therapy, or medication to help realign the sleep-wake cycle.
